Oval Ring Type Joint Gaskets - Style RTJ 302
Oval ring type joint gasket comes with an oval-shaped section by producing stainless steel materials, it is one kind of R model ring type joint gasket and the various other one is octagonal ring type gasket. These metal materials for making oval ring type joint gaskets are very good, including carbon steel and some soft iron products with low hardness and other alloys. The performance of the gasket is very good, it has strong high temperature resistance, strong pressure resistance, and good corrosion resistance. In addition, the oval ring type joint gasket can deal with the situation of particularly high temperature and strong ccausticity, so the gasket has a wide range of applications, especially in large industrial demand, for example, it is commonly used in flat gate valves, Christmas trees, pipeline fittings, pipeline flanges, gas fields, wellhead equipment, petrochemical, oil extraction machinery parts and other mechanical equipment.
Oval Ring Type Joint Gaskets are manufactured in accordance with both API 6A and ASME B16.20 to suit API 6A, ASME / ANSI B16.5, MSS SP44, ASME 16.47 SERIES A, BS 1560 ring joint type flanges. And we can offer SS 304, SS 316L, soft iron, Monel 400, SS 309, SS 316TI, INCONEL 625, Incoloy 800, Incoloy 825, INCONEL 600 oval ring type joint gaskets.
The Difference Between Oval and octagonal Ring Type Joint Gasket
The R type Ring Type Joint Gasket has 2 basic style, the Oval ring type joint gasket and octagonal ring type gasket. The octagonal cross section has a higher sealing efficiency than the oval and would be the preferred gasket. However, only the oval cross section can be used in the old type round bottom groove. The newer flat bottom groove design will accept either the oval or the octagonal cross section.
How the Oval Ring Type Joint Gasket Works?
The oval ring type joint gasket is installed in the trapezoidal ring groove on the flange surface. When the connecting bolts are tightened, the gasket will be compressed by the axial direction and tightened with the upper and lower trapezoidal grooves, resulting in plastic deformation to form an annular sealing band and establishing an initial seal. After the pressure is increased, the oval ring type joint gasket is radially expanded under the action of the medium pressure. The inclined surface of the gasket and the trapezoidal groove is tighter and produces self-tightening effect. However, the increase in medium pressure will also deform the flange and the connecting bolt, resulting in a relative separation between the sealing surfaces, and a relative decrease in the sealing ratio of the gasket. Therefore, the ring gasket can be considered as a semi-self-tightening seal.
The oval ring type joint gasket is in line contact with the flange groove and has good sealing performance, but the processing for the gasket in high accuracy, so the manufacturing cost is high. At the same time, the hardness of the oval gasket should be 15 - 20 HB lower than the flange surface, and it is not recommended to reuse it.
Application of the Oval Ring Type Joint Gasket
Oval ring type joint gasket originated in the United States as early as the 1920s. They were used in the field of boilers in the early 1920s. They were later used for manhole covers and other windows in autoclaves. They have received special attention in the petroleum production and refining industries. As the temperature and pressure of steam power plants increase, ring type joint gaskets are becoming more and more widely used.
The Oval ring type joint gasket usually used in pipe flanges, tower tanks, pressure vessels, high-speed joint surfaces, high-temperature and high-pressure valves, covers for high-temperature and high-pressure steam, gas, and solvents.
